Wildflowers

We found this beautiful wildflower in the middle of the vineyard in June 2014 when all around was dry and brown/gold.  We didn’t know what kind of weed it was until we sent a photo to Emily at Hedgerow Farm.  She emailed back that it is called narrow leaf milkweed (Asclepius fascicularis).  They are the host plant for the monarch butterflies.  Monarch caterpillars can only feed on milkweed species so they are vital to their survival.

This amazing milkweed grew on its own even though the rows had been mowed and without a drop of water other than the 6 inches of rainfall for the season.  Here's a guide to common milkweeds you might find useful.
